ANNOUNCING OUR 2026 BOOK CLUB SEASON! 🎉

This year our focus is utilizing the library as much as possible, so we've chosen books that have released in past years to make those holds a bit shorter 🤞🤞🤞.

If you're new here, welcome! We have a free book club for our members hosted in the Cozy Quill Discord. Once you're a Bindery member, just link your Discord to that community in the account settings and you'll be good to go!

Each month, I'll create a forum for the book we're reading set in three-chapter clumps for discussion. (ie: Chapters 1-3). Feel free to pop in anytime and offer your thoughts, and be sure to engage with other readers as you go! It's a great way to make a new friend and bond over stories.

I've carefully considered our books for this year, BUT these are absolutely subject to change. My goal is always to diversify our book club offerings, so if we discover a new story here or there that would improve on that mission, we're flexible. If a change does happen, you will know months in advance.

At this time, we don't offer a virtual book club event, but if you'd like to host one let me or our Discord moderators know and we can help you set that up.

Looking forward to more cozy reading with you this year!

JANUARY: A FELLOWSHIP OF BAKERS & MAGIC

In the heart of Adenashire, where elvish enchantments and dwarven delights rule, human baker Arleta Starstone works twice as hard at perfecting her unique blend of baking with apothecary herbs. So, when her orc neighbor (and biggest fan) secretly enters her creations into the prestigious Langheim Baking Battle, Arleta faces a dilemma. Being magicless, her participation in the competition could draw more scowls than smiles. And if Arleta wants to prove her talent and establish her culinary reputation, she'll need more than just her pastry craft to sweeten the odds.

Though Arleta may not yet believe in herself, she makes her way to Langheim―with the help of a very attractive woodland elf―and competes. While on a journey of mouthwatering pastries, self-discovery, heartwarming friendships, and potential romance, Arleta will have to decide whether winning the Baking Battle is the true prize after all. But win or lose, her adventure is only beginning…

Although this book is part of a series it can only be read as a standalone. Escape to Adenashire for a delightful cozy fantasy where every twist is a treat and every turn a step closer to home.

FEBRUARY: SILVER IN THE WOOD

There is a Wild Man who lives in the deep quiet of Greenhollow, and he listens to the wood. Tobias, tethered to the forest, does not dwell on his past life, but he lives a perfectly unremarkable existence with his cottage, his cat, and his dryads.

When Greenhollow Hall acquires a handsome, intensely curious new owner in Henry Silver, everything changes. Old secrets better left buried are dug up, and Tobias is forced to reckon with his troubled past—both the green magic of the woods, and the dark things that rest in its heart.

MARCH: THE GRACE OF WILD THINGS

Grace has never been good at anything except magic—not that anyone believes her. While other children are adopted from the orphanage, nobody wants Grace. So she decides to make a home for herself by running away and offering herself as an apprentice to the witch in the nearby woods. After all, who better to teach Grace to use her magic? Surely the witch can’t be that bad.

But the witch is that bad—she steals souls for spells and gobbles up hearts. So Grace offers a deal: If she can learn all 100½ spells in the witch’s grimoire, the witch will make Grace her apprentice. But if Grace fails, the witch can take her magic. The witch agrees, and soon an unexpected bond develops between them. But the spells are much harder than Grace expected, and when a monster from the witch’s past threatens the home Grace has built, she may have to sacrifice more than her magic to save it.

Inspired by Anne of Green Gables, this is a magical story of found family, loss, and the power of a girl’s imagination.

APRIL: VERA WONG'S UNSOLICITED ADVICE FOR MURDERERS

Put the kettle on, there’s a mystery brewing…
Tea-shop owner. Matchmaker. Detective?

Sixty-year-old self-proclaimed tea expert Vera Wong enjoys nothing more than sipping a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy ‘detective’ work on the internet (AKA checking up on her son to see if he’s dating anybody yet).

But when Vera wakes up one morning to find a dead man in the middle of her tea shop, it’s going to take more than a strong Longjing to fix things. Knowing she’ll do a better job than the police possibly could – because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands – Vera decides it’s down to her to catch the killer.

Nobody spills the tea like this amateur sleuth.

JUNE: Drinks & Sinkholes

Bev may not know who she was before she showed up in the quaint village of Pigsend five years ago, but that doesn't bother her much. She's made a tidy little life for herself as the proprietor of the Weary Dragon Inn, where the most notable event is when she makes her famous rosemary bread.

But when earthquakes and sinkholes start appearing all over town, including near Bev's front door, she's got to put on her sleuthing hat to figure out what—or who—might be causing them before the entire town disappears.

Drinks and Sinkholes is the first book in the Weary Dragon Inn Series.

JULY: THE KEEPER OF LONELY SPIRITS

Find an angry spirit. Send it on its way before it causes trouble. Leave before anyone learns his name.

After over two hundred years, Peter Shaughnessy is ready to die and end this cycle. But thanks to a youthful encounter with one o’ them folk in his native Ireland, he can’t. Instead, he’s cursed to wander eternally far from home, with the ability to see ghosts and talk to plants.

Immortality means Peter has lost everyone he’s ever loved. And so he centers his life on the dead—until his wandering brings him to Harrington, Ohio. As he searches for a vengeful spirit, Peter’s drawn into the townsfolk’s lives, homes and troubles. For the first time in over a century, he wants something other than death.

But the people of Harrington will die someday. And he won’t.

As Harrington buckles under the weight of the supernatural, the ghost hunt pits Peter’s well-being against that of his new friends and the man he’s falling for. If he stays, he risks heartbreak. If he leaves, he risks their lives.

AUGUST: THE GIRL WHO FELL BENEATH THE SEA

Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations. Floods sweep away entire villages, while bloody wars are waged over the few remaining resources. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering.

Many believe that Shim Cheong, the most beautiful girl in the village—and the beloved of Mina’s older brother Joon—may be the legendary true bride. But on the night Cheong is to be sacrificed, Joon follows Cheong out to sea, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong’s stead.

Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina seeks out the Sea God, only to find him caught in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man named Shin—as well as a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits—Mina sets out to wake the Sea God and bring an end to the killer storms once and for all.

But she doesn’t have much time: A human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking…

SEPTEMBER: THE KEEPER OF MAGICAL THINGS

Certainty Bulrush wants to be useful—to the Guild of Mages that took her in as a novice, to the little brother who depends on her, and to anyone else she can help. Unfortunately, her tepid magic hasn’t proven much use to anyone. When Certainty has the chance to earn her magehood via a seemingly straightforward assignment, she takes it. Nevermind that she’ll have to work with Mage Aurelia, the brilliant, unfairly attractive overachiever who’s managed to alienate everyone around her.

The two must transport minorly magical artifacts somewhere safe: Shpelling, the dullest, least magical village around. There, they must fix up an old warehouse, separate the gossipy teapots from the kind-of-flaming swords, corral an unruly little catdragon who has tagged along, and above all: avoid complications. The Guild’s uneasy relationship with citizens is at a tipping point, and the last thing needed is a magical incident.

Still, as mage and novice come to know Shpelling’s residents—and each other—they realize the Guild’s hoarded magic might do more good being shared. Friendships blossom while Certainty and Aurelia work to make Shpelling the haven it could be. But magic is fickle—add attraction and it might spell trouble.

the dark side of the moon and other things that have made me cry

Hello loves! Today I want to share a "guest" post that felt really meaningful from our dear friend, Marines with MAREAS here on Bindery. Like many of us, Mari found herself in high emotion watching the space exploration news this week and her perspective of that experience touched me.

MAREAS is also releasing an incredible book this spring, Our Sister's Keeper. In this post, she shares some updates on that title and why this release is so meaningful. I thought you'd appreciate it as much as I did. Be sure to give Mari a follow and check out her Bindery, as well!

Love to you all!

xx, Meg

_____________________________________________________________________

Hi friends,

Last night, while cuddled up on my couch in my messy apartment, I cried watching a livestream.

The crying part is not super unusual for me, to be honest. I cry at commercials, at the endings of books, at strangers' reunion videos that the algorithm decides I need to see. I cry when I'm happy or sad or mad or frustrated or otherwise processing big emotions.

But anyway, the point is that last night, I was watching the Artemis II livestream, and I completely lost it the moment they came back around from the dark side of the moon and reestablished contact with Mission Control.

If you haven't been following along, there are human beings in space right now, and they have traveled further from Earth than any humans have ever been before. That's emotional enough, but they also keep saying things from up there about Earth and about humanity and about what it looks like to see this whole messy planet from that distance, and it's wrecking me.

image

You are special, in all this emptiness. This is a whole bunch of nothing, this thing we call the universe. You have this oasis, this beautiful place that we get to exist together.

There is something about watching humans do the audacious, watching them be collaborative and hopeful in the middle of everything that's happening down here. Call them the light and dark sides of the moon: what we are capable of when we try, and what we are capable of doing to each other when we decide some people don't deserve the oasis. The cost of all of that, too—who gets to explore, who funds it, and whether that is money well spent while other things burn. (That last argument always gets complicated when you look at what else the money is being spent on, but I digress.)

The last time I cried, before the astronauts, it was about Our Sister's Keeper by Jasmine Holmes, which just so happens to have some of these same themes.

Our Sister's Keeper is set in East Cobb, Mississippi, a wealthy all-Black free town, meant to be untouched by white oppression. Thea Elliot and her husband Kid arrive with big dreams and find something that looks, at first glance, like everything they could have hoped for. But the town is haunted by ghoulish, walking nightmares that only the women can see.

Marah is a carrier: a woman with the ability to pull traumatic memories directly from men. East Cobb has flourished because women like her make it possible for men to live free of their pain.

It is, I think, one of the most precise and devastating explorations of what community costs (and who pays) that I have ever read. It is also a love letter to sisterhood. It is about audacity and collaboration. Jasmine writes with such tenderness, even in the horror. Especially in the horror, actually.

And while its final pages did indeed make me cry, the last time I cried about OSK, it was because it became real that people would have it in their hands soon.

See, the thing about acquiring a book is that you fall in love with it mostly alone, and then you spend months holding it while you wait for the rest of the world to catch up.

Which brings me to the news: Our Sister's Keeper has been chosen for Aardvark's April box, which means you don't have to wait until the June 9th pub date. You can have it right now. And not just early; This is an exclusive hardcover edition, the only way to get this book in hardback.

image

Aardvark is a monthly subscription box. They do a genuinely fantastic job of curating a diverse list and are a blast to follow on social media. And if you are new to Aardvark, you can use my code MAREAS to get Our Sister's Keeper for $4 (in the US). It's an unmatched deal, truly, and I hope you take advantage of it!

Meanwhile, pictures are flooding in of people receiving their copies, and every single one makes me cry a little. (See above re: my whole thing with crying.)

If you've already gotten yours, I want to see it. Tag me. Show me where you're reading it—on your couch, on your commute, in a patch of sunlight on the floor. Show me the oasis you made for it.

And if you haven't yet: the code is MAREAS, the deal is $4, and the book is waiting for you.

Finally, if you see me around and I'm weepy, it's either about the astronauts or about this lovely reading community.

Thank you, always.

5-star books you KEEP recommending to me 🤔

Today I'm sharing 5-star reads I've seen mentioned more than once in our Cozy Quill community. It's an amazing list, honestly, and I can't wait to dive in to a few of these! I'd love to hear, do you have any others to add to this list? xx, Meg

Cozy Quillers! Our April book club pick is Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto and I can't wait to dive into this cozy mystery with you!

image

A little about the book:

Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady--ah, lady of a certain age--who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco's Chinatown.

Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to.

Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing--a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand, a flash drive. Vera doesn't know what comes over her, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands.

Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer. What Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police?

For those new to the Cozy Quill, we host our book club discussions in our members-only Discord under the Book Club category. The format is very much like the Fable App, if you're familiar. Basically, we create 2-3 chapter clumps for you to pop into to discuss the story as you're reading.

image

We don't do a live event around book club, but if you would like to host a virtual discussion, let myself or our Discord mods know and we'll get that set up for you!

NOTE: This book is a step outside our usual cozy fantasy vibes, but I've heard such great things about this story. All content warnings are listed in Storygraph, and if this feels a bit too much this month, we'll see you in the next one.

Happy reading,

Meg

Hello friends! Just a few fun updates for you on our Twig's Traveling Tomes process. It's been an active month behind the scenes and we have SO MUCH to celebrate. Here's a few highlights:

COVER DESIGN:
As we were wrapping up the cover art, we realized that Everett wasn't standing out as much as we'd like. So with a few key adjustments we went from this:

image

To THIS:

image

I think the pop of blue really helps highlight our scrappy rogue and can't WAIT to see this in person and in YOUR hands! What do you think of the change?

BLURBS:

image

We were so fortunate this year to receive DREAM blurbs for Twig's! You'll begin to see them used in our marketing and you'll see them on your physical ARCs soon, which is exciting.

One of my FAVORITE moments of this entire process was hopping on the phone with Gryffin the moment I heard a very special blurb come in.

If you'd like to see the video of that call, CLICK HERE!

Here's what our favorite cozy authors are saying about Twigs:

"Whimsical and wonderful, Twig's Traveling Tomes is a delightful treat for book lovers in search of a charming escape!" - Sarah Beth Durst, New York Times bestselling author of THE SPELLSHOP

"Have you ever fallen in love while tumbling into a comfortable armchair with a crackling fire, and cup of tea waiting for you? If not, then this is the book you should read to experience it!" - Delemhach, bestselling author of the House Witch

"Full of found family and flirty banter, Twig’s Traveling Tomes puts a fun spin on the idea that books really can take you anywhere. This world-hopping quest with a charming band of misfits is delightfully chaotic and inventive, and will make you wish for your own magical traveling bookshop (and a good grappling hook)!" - Julie Leong, USA Today bestselling author of The Keeper of Magical Things

And we have MORE where that came from! Such a joy seeing this sweet story land with authors that have championed the genre. I couldn't be prouder of Gryffin and all the work that's led her here. She deserves every bit of this celebration and praise!

AUDIO BOOK:
I'm DELIGHTED to announce that there will be an audio book releasing for Twig's as well! We're over the moon about this news and will be partnering with RB Media (Recorded Books imprint) to publish later this year. I will keep you updated as we start the narrator hunt, but I'm confident that this team will find the perfect person to voice Louella's adventures. More to come!

BOOK BOX WINNER:
And finally, it's time to share our March Book Box winner! If you're new to SBC, each month I randomly choose a winner to receive a curated book box I make just for you. It's one of my favorite things we do here!

Today I'm delighted to announce that mickeybooklore is our March winner! Mickey, you should see an email in your inbox already, but all you need to do is fill out that form and I'll get you your box asap. Thank you so much for being a part of this cozy community!

That's all for now, friends. Looking forward to more updates soon and a LIVE interview with Gryffin to catch up and answer any questions about the process so far. Will keep you in the loop once that's scheduled.

xx,

Meg
